The Ultimate Guide to Golden Monkey Trekking in Rwanda

When people think of primate trekking in Rwanda, mountain gorillas usually steal the spotlight. And rightly so—they’re magnificent. But there’s another primate experience that’s just as magical, far less crowded, and much easier on the wallet: golden monkey trekking.

These playful, endangered primates are found only in the Virunga volcanoes region, and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park is one of the best places to see them. If you’re looking for a unique wildlife encounter that doesn’t require a full gorilla permit budget, golden monkeys might be your perfect match.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What Are Golden Monkeys?

Golden monkeys (Cercopithecus kandti) are a subspecies of the blue monkey, known for their striking golden-orange fur and playful nature. They live in the bamboo forests of the Virunga massif, which spans Rwanda, Uganda, and the DRC. They’re listed as endangered, with an estimated population of only a few thousand.

Unlike gorillas, golden monkeys are fast, agile, and constantly on the move—leaping through bamboo, swinging from branches, and chattering to each other. They live in social groups of up to 100 individuals, so you’re likely to see plenty of action during your hour with them.

Where Can You Trek Golden Monkeys?

The most accessible and popular place to trek golden monkeys is Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda. The park is a 2.5-hour drive from Kigali, making it easy to combine with a city tour or a gorilla trek.

Golden monkeys can also be trekked in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, but the Rwandan experience is more established and easier to book.

What to Expect on a Golden Monkey Trek

Morning briefing:
You’ll arrive at the Volcanoes National Park headquarters early in the morning (around 7:00 AM) for a briefing by Rwanda Development Board rangers. You’ll be allocated to a troop and assigned a ranger guide.

The trek:
The hike to find the monkeys can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on where the troop is feeding that day. The terrain is often through bamboo forest, which can be dense and muddy, but it’s generally less strenuous than gorilla trekking.

The encounter:
Once you find the troop, you’ll spend one hour with them. They’re incredibly active—jumping, feeding, and playing—so bring a camera with a good zoom lens. Your guide will help you get the best views.

After the trek:
You’ll return to the headquarters, where you can receive a certificate and browse local crafts. Many travelers pair the trek with a visit to Ibyiwacu Cultural Village or a relaxation afternoon at their lodge.

Golden Monkey Permits: Cost and Booking

In Rwanda, a golden monkey permit costs $100 for foreign non-residents (as of 2024). That’s a fraction of the gorilla permit price, making it an accessible add-on or standalone activity.

Permits can be booked through a licensed tour operator like Ringstone Safaris, or directly with the Rwanda Development Board. During peak seasons (June–September and December–February), it’s wise to book in advance, though they’re generally easier to secure than gorilla permits.

Best Time to Trek Golden Monkeys

Golden monkey trekking is available year-round, but the dry seasons—June to September and December to February—offer easier hiking conditions and better visibility. The rainy seasons (March–May and October–November) can make trails muddy and slippery, but the forest is lush and the monkeys are still active.

What to Wear and Bring

  • Sturdy hiking shoes with good grip
  • Long trousers and long-sleeved shirt (to protect against nettles and insects)
  • Rain jacket and small backpack
  • Gardening gloves (for grabbing bamboo and vines)
  • Insect repellent
  • Camera with zoom lens (no flash)
  • Plenty of water and a snack
  • Porter – hire one locally to carry your bag; it supports the community

Combining Golden Monkey Trekking with Other Activities

Golden monkey trekking pairs perfectly with:

  • Kigali city tour – Genocide Memorial, Kimironko Market, craft villages
  • Gorilla trekking – if you’re up for two treks in two days
  • Ibyiwacu Cultural Village – traditional dance, medicine, and storytelling
  • Lake Kivu – a relaxing beach escape after your trek
  • Nyungwe Forest – chimpanzee trekking and canopy walks

At Ringstone Safaris, our 3-Day Golden Monkey & Kigali City Tour combines the best of both worlds: a guided city tour, a golden monkey trek, and optional cultural experiences. It’s a gentle, varied safari that’s perfect for travelers who want wildlife without the intensity of a full gorilla trek.
